The Aethernaut

I’ve always been partial to the risqué so it was only a matter of time before Naughty Naked Nude was born. A selection of can-can dancers, French maids, artists models and fast women flaunt themselves in delectable sepia – how could anyone resist?

…in my beautiful airship, balloon or dirigible!

Not content with creating Steampunk jewellery proper I’ve been inspired by those gorgeously coloured 18th century craft invented and perfected by the intrepid French! Romance and adventure await, all you need to do is climb aboard…

Go and set sail at Airship Adventures – at Brilliant Aether

…and one of my all time favourites is Robot Maria from Fritz Lang’s cinematic classic Metropolis. So when I decided that what Brilliant Aether lacked was a theme dedicated to robots it was obvious who’d be in there first. I’m especially fond of the Art Deco styled necklace below.

See these and more in the I Love Robots section at Brilliant Aether.

There’s a new category in the shop! Psychogeography…
“the study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behaviour of individuals.” Another definition is “a whole toy box full of playful, inventive strategies for exploring cities…just about anything that takes pedestrians off their predictable paths and jolts them into a new awareness of the urban landscape.”*
Psychogeography will feature pieces that depict urban landscapes through maps, encouraging exploration and affinities with favourite cityscapes. Beginning with London, but swiftly exploring new geographies farther afield – what town or city would you celebrate?

On my recent wanderings I acquired this really rather lovely miniature treasure chest. It’s not just a fun jewellery box (that’s what I’m using it for) , it’s also incredibly photogenic. I have a feeling it’s going to be appearing in product photos some time soon! Pictured inside it is a new Alice In Wonderland necklace which I’ve just finished making.

If you’ve been watching Brilliant Aether recently you’ll have noticed that I’ve gone headfirst down the rabbit hole to Wonderland. I’ve always been inspired by Lewis Carrol’s fabulously skewed logic and the infinitely spirited heroine that is Alice. Whatever happens she generally remembers her manners and approaches the most alarming situations with initiative and curiosity. A girl to be reckoned with!

Keep an eye on the new Alice in Wonderland category in the Brilliant Aether online shop for cute and one of a kind accessories inspired by Alice and her fantastic adventures. There will be cake, and tea parties!

It’s a little sweet toothed, but I like it anyway; I mean, all the more interesting women have struggled with cake whether it be Marie Antoinette, Alice in Wonderland or Courtney Love. This dainty little ring would look good on the pinkie of any of them. Do you want to be the girl with the most cake? I do!

We’ve just had the budget here in the UK, and I can’t help but wish that Lady Godiva had been around to save us from it. Who could we ask nowadays to ride through town stark naked in order to get all those cuts revoked? Cheryl Cole perhaps? Sigh. I’m only joking. An alternative could be to wear this vintage brass Lady Godiva necklace to ward off cruel tax men. She’s beautiful and competitively priced which is more than you can say for the nations sweetheart. Go on, buy her, you know you want to.

Lady Godiva Naked On Horseback Vintage Necklace in an extremely limited edition of two, available now in my DaWanda Shop.

I’ve been busily making Ragged Roses – they get bigger and bigger and more opulent the more I make, and I have made quite a few. Gradually these are being added to the Brilliant Aether Shop, as hair ornaments. Made from sumptuously coloured voile, the petals are layered differently each time so every flower is unique. All have beautiful glass beads in their centre and are attached to sturdy hair clips which firmly hold the flower to your hair.

*Edit* The peaches and cream hair flower sold within a day of appearing in the shop – so if you see one you like don’t miss your chance to own it!

During my recent trip to Copenhagen, we visited the Baroque Church of our Saviour. And when I say we visited it, I mean we barely looked about ourselves before feverishly climbing the tight spiral staircase within its gilded spiral tower. For someone like me who is scared of heights, this is no mean feat.

To climb the entire 90 metres would, for me, have been a torture – I contented myself with the lower balcony which is still dizzyingly high. Many fresh faced examples of Danish youth smiled reassuringly at me as I clung in sweaty horror to the railing and watched my friends disappear up the final, steep slope. Even the fearless ones confessed to a touch of vertigo and a bit of the old wobbly knee. Didn’t stop my partner, R, from telling me he had actually reached out and touched the gilded ball at the top of the spire though… I on the other hand, preferred the gentle delights to be found inside the tower.

Halfway up the inner staircase I discovered these stone wings, imprisoned behind a metal grating. I enjoyed having the excuse of photographing them. Oh, and before I forget to tell you, this is the church tower described in Jules Verne’s Journey to the centre of the Earth, and which his brother and nephew climbed on a visit to the city. You can read Paul Vernes entertaining account of climbing the tower here.

Best of all the things I saw was not the view from the top, but this mechanical wonder. Whether it was part of the clock mechanism or part of the Carillion I do not know; climbing up and down the narrow spiral staircase with little room to stop and let others go by, I barely had a chance to look. I’m glad I snatched a photo of it so I could enjoy it at my leisure.
